Origins of Dragon Boat Racing –
Dragon boats racing originated along the banks of the Yangtze River in south central China over 2,500 years ago. The sport has a rich fabric of ancient ceremonial, ritualistic and religious traditions and is the basis for annual water rituals and festival celebrations as well as veneration of the Asian dragon water deity.
Each Dragon Boat has 20 paddlers, a steersperson and a drummer who work to achieve a team result gained only through the efforts of the whole crew, rather than a few individual performances. Training and racing together develops team spirit and harmony of purpose. A very social sport, Dragon Boating is perfect for organizational team building and as a community activity as well as being a high-performance sport for elite athletes. And did we mention, it is great fun, too!!
Thank you to our 2017 Sponsors!
Forming a Team –
You can form a team with friends, neighbors and co-workers, or student groups and businesses can organize a team. A team is 20 paddlers (a minimum of 16 paddlers) and a drummer; your roster can have up to 24 paddlers plus a drummer and helmsperson (War on the Peace will provide you a helmsperson). Mixed male/female teams must have a minimum of one-half female paddlers. We provide practice sessions for your team (see "Registration" to sign up a team, and "Contact us" for the practice schedule).
Come as a Spectator – Racing is along the Laishley Park warterfront. Bring camp chairs or blankets, and you won't miss a thing. Races start at 8:00AM and end around 3:00PM, with an awards ceremony. Splash-by-splash commentary by John Wright, PG Chamber President.
